Trip to Bhutan establishes new priorities

This months trip to Bhutan has established new priorities for the charity going forward. Following the visit to the primary school in Meritismo it is clear that additional funds are needed to provide basic bedding for the 84 children, repair the leaking roof and build a play park. At present the children play in a heavily waterlogged field which attracts malarial mosquitos and is unsafe. On the trip Emma donated laptops and sports equipment donated in Britain and basic equipment including a strimmer, kitchen mixer and books to the school.

Pop Up Bag Shopped Launched

Fabric bags handwoven by children at the Drat-sko vocational school in Tashigang will be sold at a pop up charity event being run by the Umbrella Cafe on the 5th February. The bags will be sold between 10am and 12 noon with all proceeds going to the charity Opening Your Heart to Bhutan. Jo Verney, partner at the Umbrella Cafe said "These beautiful bags are bound to be the must have fashion accessory in town and are doing a wonderful thing for the weavers and their communities." The venture is the latest in a series of events run by the charity at the Whitstable Umbrella Centre. Ani Pema recieves Point of Light Award

Emma Slade, also known as Ani Pema Deki, was today presented with a Point of Light Award from Theresa May, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, in recognition of her work supporting children in Bhutan. The award was presented by Michael Rutland, the UK's High Consul of Bhutan and the Bhutanesse Foreign Minister, Damcho Dorji. The Point of Light Awards were launched by then president George Bush in 1990 to recognise volunteers in the United States and later adopted in the UK from 2014. Emma is one of nine volunteers to be awarded the prize this year.
